The incident took place during the 1973 National League playoffs between the Reds and Mets, a wonderous time when fisticuffs on the basepaths was commonplace (as evidenced by the umpire (bottom-left) who couldn't care less). This photo brilliantly captures Rose just seconds after realizing that the Reds weren't going to cover the spread.
